Cultivating Abundance, Sustaining Life
AOL Permaculture
What is Permaculture?
Permaculture is the art of designing with nature. Rooted in observation and respect for the earth’s rhythms, it offers practical tools for growing food, restoring ecosystems, and building communities that thrive. At its heart, permaculture is a return to an ancient understanding, that when we care for the land, the land cares for us.
Permaculture gives us a toolkit for moving from a culture of fear and scarcity to one of love and abundance

Meet Binay
Binay was born into a farmer’s family but spent a decade in the corporate world before finding his way to Art of Living and Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in 2007, where he has remained ever since.
In 2013, he began working on what was essentially a dead mountain. On the land assigned to him there were 40-degree slopes. It was barren and lifeless. With no formal training, just hands-on practice and permaculture principles, he worked alone, day and night, slowly bringing the land back to life. As the greenery grew, so did his conviction. Over time, a team formed, visitors arrived, and the project expanded.
One day, while speaking to a group inside a bus about Permaculture at the Art of Living campus, someone quietly recorded him. That video went viral and Binay became known as the “Man in the Bus.” It was a turning point. He realized how urgent it is to speak honestly about the issues that define our survival: pollution, environment, sustainability, and our relationship with the land.
Since then, he has spoken at conferences, TEDx stages, and countless gatherings. But for Binay, what matters most is practice, not theory. He only talks about what he lives. And his greatest reward? The volunteers and participants who take what they learn and replicate it across the country.

New to permaculture? Start with our online Foundations course and learn the principles at your own pace. Ready for more? Join us at the ashram for 9 days of living and working on the land. Let Nature be your teacher.

Foundations of Permaculture (Online)
Your first step into the world of permaculture. Learn the core principles, understand how natural systems work, and discover how to apply this thinking to your own life, wherever you are. No experience needed. Just an open mind and a willingness to learn.

Urban Permaculture (Online)
Permaculture doesn’t need to be just for farms. Learn how to grow food on balconies, harvest rainwater in small spaces, reduce waste, and create abundance in the city. Practical techniques for urban homes, rooftops, and community spaces.

Spirit of the Soil (In-person)
Spend nine days on the land with us. You will learn elements of designing, planting, building, and working the earth alongside our team. Wake with the sun, learn from the soil, and leave with skills you can only gain by doing.
Life at our Farm
What was once a barren mountainside is now a thriving ecosystem. Over the years, our team has transformed this land using permaculture principles. One bed, one swale, one tree at a time. These images are proof of what’s possible.
